Adults
Autistic people and their families in Ontario encounter systemic obstacles that make it difficult to access equitable services, supports and opportunities to live the lives they want. After turning 18, many supports that families rely on for their autistic children and youth diminish. This happens at a time when consistency, accommodation, and autism acceptance remain critical.
Autistic people and their families tell us they struggle to navigate various service systems including developmental, healthcare, housing, legal, financial, employment, and social services. They tell us they are not aware of available services, funding, and opportunities for autistic adults. Additionally, the services that may be available may not be autism-informed, suitable, flexible, or equipped to address their short and long-term needs. Autistic adults are capable and eager to work; however, they continue to be underemployed due to systemic barriers and outdated processes. This inaccessibility disproportionately contributes to many autistic adults as well as caregivers of autistic adults experiencing poverty and mental health issues in their lifetime.
"I think this was an amazing experience. I learned a lot and feel more prepared for life now that I understand better what I'm living with. This was an important step for me in acknowledging my disability and accepting my diagnosis" (participant of New Diagnosis Adult Group)
