Autism Ontario South Region cut the cake at a celebration later in 2025 marking the 25th anniversary of its Niagara Region Summer Camp. Invited guests from around the region gathered to celebrate, share memories, and look forward to the next 25 years.

The event marked an important milestone both for Autism Ontario and the Niagara Region, says Janine O’Brien, Autism Ontario’s Fund and Volunteer Team Lead. “It’s important because we’re celebrating the 25 years this camp has been going on in Niagara, and that's 25 years of families needing the camp and attending the camp, 25 years of having dedicated staff and volunteers that help support, and 25 years of donors. So, it's really honouring as those who have come and ensured its success.”

Autism Ontario’s Niagara Region summer camps have had an ongoing impact in the community that can be clearly measured, says Janine. “We constantly hear from our families how there is no camp like our camp that their children or autistic adults can attend. It shows how this camp has been instrumental in the community, and how, through constant attendance and constant support, the need is there. The need is great, and it is crucial to continue happening in our community.”

Over one hundred invited guests attended the event, which was held at Autism Ontario’s office at the McBain Community Centre in Niagara Falls. Many guests talked about the importance of the camp in their lives and the impact it has had on her family’s life. Several stood in front of the group to give testimonials, including Vanessa Coens, parent and Autism Ontario’s People and Family Experience Coordinator – South Region. She and her son Owen spoke at the event.

"Autism Ontario South Region's summer camp has been a staple in our family for many years, especially for my son Owen,” says Vanessa. “Camp has always been the highlight of his summers — offering him the opportunity to build friendships, explore new adventures in the community, and, most importantly, be supported by staff who are both well-trained and genuinely passionate.”

Now 18, Owen continues to make Autism Ontario camp a top priority each summer. The impact this program has had on his growth, happiness, and sense of belonging is immeasurable. Our family is truly grateful for the dedication behind this program, and we were honoured to be part of this momentous celebration.”

Beyond the simple action of giving those who might not otherwise have had the opportunity to attend a summer camp, there is also a ripple effect. For parents, this means, says Janine, a brief chance at respite. “Especially during the summer,” she says, “when individuals lose their sense of routine, and they sometimes struggle with that, so camp can kind of bring that routine back a little bit for them.”

Both the camp and the celebration that marked the 25th anniversary have their base in the community that supports them, which Janine is quick to note. “It was a wholesome coming together of the community to celebrate inclusiveness, community, connection and belonging. It was a great turnout and just a great celebration altogether.”
