Autism Ontario Dances with the National Ballet of Canada

The Nutcracker, as danced by the National Ballet of Canada, has long been a holiday favourite. The ballet, written by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1892, tells the story of a child's magical Christmas Eve. The tradition of attending the Nutcracker ballet has been passed down from parents who experienced it as children and are now continuing the tradition by taking their own children to the performance. Joy Alma, Toronto Region Program and Volunteer Coordinator at Autism Ontario, is one of those parents, long participating with her children in the National Ballet of Canada's Youth, Outreach, and

Welcome to the Blog!

~ 2 minute read Greetings! Welcome to our new Autism Ontario Blog! I am Ken Robertson, elected and volunteer Board Member and Treasurer for the past three years. I am Indigenous from Secwepemc Nation of the South Thompson Band of Neskonlith peoples, which is Interior Salish. My clan is the Cinnamon Bear, and my spirit name is “Skylux,” meaning Bear Cubs (a name that suits me well because I have an identical twin). I am proud to be able to give a voice to Indigenous people across Ontario. We on Autism Ontario’s Board want to make ourselves more available to you, to be more transparent, and to

The Mask

~ 4 minute read This article was originally published in 2015. As someone on the Autism Spectrum, I’m always aware of the fact that I’m an atypical living in a largely neurotypical world. I see the same world through a different lens, and my brain runs on a completely different operating system. That’s as irrefutable a fact as saying that the sky is blue, or that the grass is green. It’s just the way things are. As such, I have to adapt. I’ve often been told that I have a flair for the dramatics, and that I could be an actor. That makes sense—seeing as how I essentially act every day of my

How can Autism Ontario best stay connected with you at this time? 2. Share your ideas

Being Social at Work

~ 4 minute read Work is complex and tedious. That’s why it’s called “work.” Being social at work can be even more cumbersome. Most jobs require some form of teamwork and communication; however, those that relate to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) struggle more with social-communication than others (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). As such, being social at work may result in workplace stress (Hayword, McVilly, & Stokes, 2019). In a recent study (Lorenz, Frischling, Cuadros, & Heinitz, 2016), concerns around being social in the workplace was cited as the most common barrier to employment

How the Parade of Lights Illuminates Support for Autism Ontario

For 24 years, the Parade of Lights has been a holiday celebration in Thunder Bay, Ontario. On the first Saturday in December, a parade of over 100 colourfully lighted trucks towing trailers and floats slowly winds through the streets of Thunder Bay, flanked by cheering onlookers who eagerly fill donation buckets that are passed along the route. For just about as long, Autism Ontario has been part of the Parade of Lights. Last year, the annual charitable event, which raises funds for local children's charities, raised over $10,500 alone for Autism Ontario. "All the funds raised by the parade

Autism Ontario

Now more than ever, we must be active and deliberate in listening to and including black autistic voices across the province.

Autism Ontario aims to support and advocate for all autistic individuals across the province, regardless of race, ethnicity, income, religion or gender identity. The recent harrowing events remind us of the systemic injustices that have always and continue to exist for many of our marginalized members of society. These deep-rooted barriers are especially amplified for people who are Black, Indigenous and People of Colour. Along with the obstacles people on the autism spectrum may face, Black and Indigenous autistic people and their communities also struggle to acquire equitable access to

Tips and Tricks to be Physically Active

~ 3 minute read Participating in physical activity can help make you feel good, create routine and provide an opportunity to create social connections. Being physically active can also improve physical health (e.g., reduce risk of a heart attack). Participating in physical activity can also improve mental health by reducing stress and anxiety (Hillier et al., 2010), and provide a sense of predictability, as well as feelings of fun, joy and pleasure. Since the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted our daily routines and lives in many ways, being physically active during this time is especially
