Ensure They Are Not “Forgotten” - Autism Ontario's World Autism Awareness Day Focus on Adults
Autism Ontario has chosen to focus its provincial World Autism Awareness Day efforts on raising awareness and funds around adults with ASD.

The challenges facing adults with ASD and their families in Ontario are many. While some services and supports for children with ASD are legally mandated while they are in the school system, there are no such mandated services for adults. Many families are discovering, to their alarm, that services for their adult children – beginning with transition support from high school to post-secondary life – may not exist at all in their community.

In 2008, we brought together individuals from a wide range of disciplines, including parents of adult children with ASD, to research and write a paper to inform Ontario public policy for services to adolescents and adults with ASD. The result of that effort was “Forgotten”, published in late 2008, that examined the emerging crisis in adult services and made a number of recommendations to address it.

We are working diligently with our community partners, and with the provincial government, to make these recommendations a reality. But to help families struggling today – and to help address the needs as they exist now in communities across the province – we need your help.

To mark World Autism Day by supporting Autism Ontario’s work with adults with ASD, consider making a donation. This can be securely and conveniently online by credit card (and select “World Autism Day 2009” on the drop-down fund menu).
