Kids Bowling

 

Thurs Jan 4, 2018 from 6:30-7:30 pm (over the holiday break)

You are invited to Classic Bowl in Mississauga to enjoy an hour of bowling.  Come and enjoy some social time and knock down a few pins!  Use of bowling shoes are included in this event and must be worn.  Don't forget to bring socks! 

To allow as many families as possible to attend, we are asking that only children with ASD and their siblings participate. The lanes will be shared amongst the various children.

 Quiet Santa

Quiet Time with Santa Visit - At Square One in Mississauga with Autism Ontario Peel - Nov 26 and Dec 3, 2017

Everyone deserves to have a comfortable, enjoyable holiday experience.  If your child with ASD is overwhelmed by the noise and the crowds and all that goes with traditional visits with Santa, than this is for you!

On Sunday, November 26, 2017 and Sunday, December 3, 2017, the Peel Chapter of Autism Ontario has teamed up with Square One to host a special Quiet Time with Santa event for families who may be overwhelmed by usual holiday festivities.

There will be a limited number of one-on-one appointments with Santa from 8:00 am to 10:00 am on both days. Please register on this page to secure your time.  You will be able to select from the available time slots on the next page.

Sessions are 10 minutes.  Regular visits with Santa are approximately 3 minutes in length.  Santa's helpers will be on-site for your visit with Santa. Photo package options will be available to purchase. 

Square One will be donating 50 cents from all photo packages sold from the 2017 season to Autism Ontario's Peel Chapter.

Notes:

To allow as many families as possible to participate, please select ONLY ONE DATE & TIME.  Families who register for more than one time slot will have both time slots cancelled.

Families are invited to come out for an enjoyable family skating at the Cassie Campbell Community Centre! The rink will be used exclusively for Autism Ontario Peel for the hour!

Autism Ontario - PEERS with Kerry's Place - Brampton Jan-Apr/2018

Teens with ASD, in grades 9-12 are invited to this 16-week evidence-based social skills workshop.  This group is designed for individuals who are able to participate with minimal support. The individual may need some prompts to stay on task, and is able to communicate wants and needs effectively. The individual does not require a lot of behavioural redirection.

PEERS (Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills) is geared towards motivated high functioning teens who are interested in learning ways to help them make and keep friends, and develop strategies for handling peer rejection/conflict.

During each group, session adolescents are taught important social skills and are given the opportunity to practice these skills in session during socialization activities (e.g. playing sports, board games, etc.).

During the course of this 16 week program, teens will learn how to:

  • develop conversational skills,
  • "trade information" to find common interests,
  • appropriately use electronic forms of communication,
  • start, join, and exit conversations,
  • find and join an appropriate social group,
  • organize and have successful get-togethers,
  • handle arguments, rejection, and teasing,
  • handle physical and cyber bullying,
  • minimize rumours and gossip,
  • change a reputation.

Regular attendance is imperative.

iConnext will meet once per month, on the second Thursday of the month.  What are your favorite activities?  Bowling, movies, mini golf, dinner out, games nights, pizza dinners?  Group members will determine all future events & activities.

Paulette supports individuals affected with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families.  Following the principles of Applied Behavioural Analysis, she creates and delivers training to teachers and parents on a variety of topics: ABA principles, visuals, communications, social skills, self-regulation and many more.  The focus of Paulette's work has involved coaching social skills in the natural environment and stress/anxiety reduction through breath and movement practices.  Paulette is certified in Triple P Stepping Stones, Breathe Body Mind Practice and Facing Your Fears.

Using the recreation model developed by the Special Olympics, Peel ACTTs will feature:

ACTIVE START (from 6-7 pm) is a program for individuals with ASD with increased difficulties and who generally need TA support at school. Participants will work on following group instruction, develop basic movement skills and follow a routine with visual supports. The goal is for the participant to have the physical skills and fitness ability to participate in physical activities and to have fun! 

***Suggested age  - 4 to 12+ years old*** This is a recommended age only.  If your child is slightly older and you think they suit this program, please register.

*This program requires caregivers to support their child and participate in the full duration of the each session for all 9 weeks.

The program is overseen by 2 facilitators, 1 is a trained IBI therapist, the other is a yoga instructor as well as Autism Ontario Volunteers.


DATES: Monday, Oct 23, 30, Nov 6, 13, 20, 27, Dec 4, 11, 18/ 2017 from 6-7 pm

LOCATION: Conestoga Public School, 300 Conestoga Dr., Brampton, ON L6Z 3M3

Fall Karate Classes at the AMA: Higher Needs Group (kids that need some parental assistance)

This is a beginner program for individuals with ASD with increased difficulties. 
**Parents MUST participate with their children in this group one on one**  
Children with ASD, ages 6 and up, are invited to attend 10 weeks of private karate classes in Brampton at the Academy of Martial Arts.

  •   What do I need to do before sessions begin?

If you are a returning participant, please pay and fillout paperwork at your first class.  If you will miss this class, please arrange an alternative time with Carrie at cpercival@amadojo.com 
If you are a new participant, please arrive 15-20 minutes prior to your first class to fill out the necessary paperwork, make payment and receive your uniform. If you cannot do this, please contact Carrie at cpercival@amadojo.com to make alternative arrangements.
  *You must fill out an in-home waiver form, pay and have a uniform to participate* 
  •   If my child is a returning participant, will they experience new activities? 

For those that are coming again, they will challenge them with new activities and moves to learn. Those that pick up the curriculum can be graded for a belt, should the parents want them to.  They would set a date and time for them to grade, where they would perform their Karate moves in front of instructor who would mark them.
This is not a graded class session. Although some kids may be offered a chance to grade for a belt at some point, it may take several sessions to do so. There is no expectation of advancement of belt for any session. 
  • What If I need to bring my other children with me? 

As you are needed to assist your child with ASD during the session, please ensure you have another adult with you to supervise the sibling in the waiting room. Siblings CANNOT be in the dojo/classroom. Siblings cannot be left unattended in the waiting room.
