Next Occupational Therapy Clinic Day:  December 16, 2011

Sensory and motor differences are very common in children with ASD and often interfere with learning. Autism Ontario Realize Community Potential Program and York Region Chapter are pleased to host monthly Occupational Therapy Clinic Days with Shirley Sutton, BSc OT, OT Reg.(Ont.)

Your child may have one or more of these issues:

  • Seems clumsy, has too many accidents
  • Self stimulatory needs
  • Sensory over reactions, sensory seeking or sensory avoiding behaviours
  • Behaviours that may be triggered by sensory issues
  • Over sensitivity to food textures
  • Bringing toys or clothes to the mouth
  • Difficulty with arts & crafts, printing or drawing
  • Your child may be on an OT wait list for funded services through Early Intervention Services or CCAC (school age)

What would happen during the consultation?

Depending on the nature of the consult request identified on the intake form, the sessions will vary according to your child’s needs. Shirley will likely present a wide range of sensory experiences and opportunities to your child and evaluate which ones are calming and organizing; versus sensations which increase your child’s anxiety and/or stress. Shirley will then help you in planning changes to the school or home environment to reduce these over-reactions. Specialized equipment and/or exercises may be recommended.
