Camp History

Sincere thanks to the dedicated members of our Volunteer Camp Committee who, year after year, have so selflessly committed many hours of personal time to ensure that our ASD community continues to be enriched by supported recreational opportunities.

AOK Camp AOA, run by Autism Ontario York Region Chapter, has been in continuous operation since 1987. A handful of parents created the first camp because their children with ASD couldn't be accomodated by the summer day programs available in their area.

Partnering with Kerry's Place Autism Services in 2006, camp expanded to specialize in suppporting youth with Asperger's Syndrome and High Functioning Autism.

With a 3-year grant from The Ontario Trillium Foundation in 2009, York Chapter created the Adult Summer Program, expanding services to adults living with ASD.

Parent volunteers remain at the heart of AOK Camp AOA; the camp committee meets several times a year and supports our Chapter Manager in developing policies, mapping our sessions, determining pricing, staff hiring and evaluation, fundraising and troubleshooting.

Our phenomenal summer staff is made up of teachers and those pursuing careers in teaching, educational assistants, students pursuing graduate or post-graduate degrees in psychology, teaching, kinesiology and other fields related to ASD and others who work with people living with ASD and other exceptionalities.  Read Profiles of our Senior Camp Staff
