Families Disability funding: Meet the parents who are speaking out

Cathy Chauvin burst into tears at the finish line of her first half-marathon last month. It wasn’t exhaustion, but the sight of her son Joseph waiting to greet her from his wheelchair.

Joe, 17, is the youngest of four kids in his blended family, a teen who relishes being outside on the family farm in southern Ontario.

He also needs full-time care. The $8,000 a year the family receives through Special Services at Home has meant they can hire at-home support to help care for Joe, who is developmentally delayed and has cerebral palsy. It helps cover the $20-an-hour costs of hiring a student nurse a couple of times a week. Continue reading.
